Board of Directors

On April 1st, 2006, more than 20 women attended a retreat to discuss the future of Alaska Women's Environmental Network (AWEN). This meeting resulted in the formation of the AWEN Board. The current Board is comprised of enthusiastic women who volunteer to make AWEN's mission a reality.

President, Mentor Program Chair
Melanie Smith has an M.A. degree in Geography from the University of Montana. She is currently Audubon Alaska's Staff Biologist & GIS Analyst, working on conservation science in the Arctic and Tongass. She also volunteers for the Bird Treatment and Learning Center, and enjoys birding, hiking, fishing, and skijoring around Alaska.

Kristen Gilbert
has a M.S. degree in Natural Resources from Utah State University. Kristen is currently the Friends, Volunteers & Grants Coordinator for the National Wildlife Refuge System. She is a Certified Interpretive Guide Trainer with the National Association for Interpretation and has an extensive background in volunteer management.

Erika Ammann was lucky enough to be born in Alaska. Erika holds a M.S. degree in Fisheries Science and works on habitat restoration for NOAA Fisheries. She enjoys skiing, foursquare, hiking, curling, reading and hopes to have a pet goat one day when she is more responsible.

Jennifer Hillman, AWEN Secretary, is a graduate of Northern Michigan University with a B.S. in both Mathematics and Environmental Policy. Jennifer works on land use policy and the National Environmental Policy Act under the Alaska Wilderness League's BLM Wildlands Program. For fun Jen races triathlons, golfs, exercises, and loves playing outside.

Colleen Keane in Alaska since 1998. She began working for Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) in October 2006 as an Environmental Health and Justice Organizer. Colleen graduated Summa Cum Laude from Seattle University with a B.A. in Ecological Studies, worked as an organic landscaper, and interned at the Belize Audubon Society.

Casey Bradshaw moved to Anchorage in January 2008 from Boone, NC. She earned a B.S. from East Carolina University in Interior Design. Casey has since focused on renewable, sustainable energies. She hopes to develop an energy plan for businesses in Alaska. She is currently an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. She enjoys overseas travel, winter sports and rock hounding.

Claire Matthews earned a B.A. in architecture from Yale University. She grew up in Fairbanks and has lived in Anchorage since 2008. She is interested in sustainable design, urban planning and the local food movement. Claire loves to canoe, hike, garden and play banjo. Claire works for UAA's Office of Institutional Research.

Kelly Ingram has a B.S. in Environmental Biology from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Kelly came to Anchorage in August as an Americorps VISTA volunteer working at the Cooperative Extension Service. Kelly looks forward to meeting new people in the Anchorage environmental community and is excited to be a part of AWEN!
