Board of Directors

On April 1st, 2006, more than 20 women attended a retreat to discuss the future of Alaska Women's Environmental Network (AWEN). This meeting resulted in the formation of the AWEN Board. The current Board is comprised of enthusiastic women who volunteer to make AWEN's mission a reality.

Colleen Keane has lived in Alaska since 1998. She currently is the Alaska Program Associate for Pacific Environment, an international non-profit organization that works to protect the living environment of the Pacific Rim. Previously, she worked for Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) for four years as an Environmental Health and Justice Organizer. Colleen graduated Summa Cum Laude from Seattle University with a B.A. in Ecological Studies, worked as an organic landscaper and interned at the Belize Audubon Society. She finds her peace among plants.

Melanie Smith has an M.A. degree in Geography from the University of Montana. She is Audubon Alaska's Landscape Ecologist, working on analysis and conservation planning for the Arctic Ocean, North Slope and Southeast Alaska rainforest. She is also on the board of the Anchorage Skijor Club. She spend her free time skijoring, birding, home brewing and fishing around Alaska.

April Reed was born and raised in the Midwest, and she moved to Alaska in 2002, living all over the state to settle for the past four years in Anchorage. Having completed a MS in Environmental Education and starting a family here, Alaska has never felt more like home to her! Exploring the connections between peace studies, environmental education and sustainable solutions to living respectfully with all living creatures and systems in this amazing laboratory has been her dream. As a board member of AWEN, she hopes to share her love of Alaska living with other like-minded scientists and continue to make life-long connections to this environment and her community.

Erika Ammann was lucky enough to be born in Alaska. Erika holds a M.S. degree in Fisheries Science and works on habitat restoration for NOAA Fisheries. She enjoys skiing, foursquare, hiking, curling, reading and hopes to have a pet goat one day when she is more responsible.

Currently, Kate McKeown works as a Clean Energy Coordinator with the Alaska Conservation Alliance. She graduated from the University

of Portland with a BS in Civil Engineering and a MS in Strategic Leadership Toward Sustainability from Blekinge Institute of Technology. Originally from Idaho, she was exposed to the great outdoors at an early age and has been hiking, biking, camping, and kayaking ever since.

Kristen Gilbert
has a M.S. degree in Natural Resources from Utah State University. Kristen is currently the Friends, Volunteers & Grants Coordinator for the National Wildlife Refuge System. She is a Certified Interpretive Guide Trainer with the National Association for Interpretation and has an extensive background in volunteer management. She enjoys cycling and studying nutrition and other health and fitness topics.

Rebecca Baril was born and raised in Sault Sainte Marie, MI where she lived until moving to Alaska in summer 2011. She graduated in April with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and a second Bachelor's in Environmental Chemistry and minor in GIS.I enjoy hiking, downhill skiing, camping and being outdoors.

Autumn Bryson has a M.S. degree in Soil Science from West Virginia University. She currently works as an Environmental Scientist with Zender Environmental providing technical assistance and training to Alaska Native Tribes. When not working, Autumn enjoys spending time outdoors and traveling.
